Yes they are. Finally figured out how the group permissions work. It's stupid the defaults are set to locked down.
It seems not; I've tried both groups. This one seems to be more casual, so they each have a nice niche! 
In any case, thanks affliction. Also, thanks BB for the original group invite. I wouldn't have even ever stumbled across deviantart groups were it not for that!
